On behalf of the European Space Agency, we are looking for a highly skilled Support to the Space Environments and Effects Engineer to work in ESTEC, in the Netherlands.
What is expected from you:
- The candidate shall provide technical support in all missions and programmes where the ESA Space Environments and Effects Team is active. This shall include:
▪ Simulations and analysis utilising, as required, tools and models available in the Areas of competences for the various space environments and effects. These include, but are not limited to, SPIS, Geant4/GRAS, ESABASE, FASTRAD, SPENVIS, OMERE, ODI, HIERRAS and the Network of Models (NoM).
▪ Support to possible space environment instrument testing and/or calibration campaigns, and to in-flight data processing and analyses efforts.
▪ Support to project reviews and possible verification activities.
▪ Preparation of technical notes and presentations on the different analyses carried out. - The candidate shall provide support to the ESA TOs and TRs in space environments and effects R&D activities. This shall include:
▪ Contributions to R&D idea formulation, technology development plans under the various ESA programmes, and other preparatory activities in support of the TO and/or TRs. - Support to R&D activity reviews and meetings, and possible related verification and analysis activities.
- The candidate shall support the Area of Competence in the development of Hands-On activities and CDF studies. This shall include:
• Contributions to new mission and activity studies in the CDF.
• Maintenance and development of the Areas of Competences IT infrastructure, tools, and models.
• Support to community coordination and related actions (e.g. in the direction of SPINE, Geant4, and Geant4-DNA Collaborations, EHIRAF forum, SEENoTC network, SPACEMON and RADSHIELD workshops, cooperations with CERN and GSI).
• Support to the preparation and running of dedicated Hands-On activities in the space environments and effects domain. - The candidate shall support the outreach and knowledge management activities of the Areas of Competences. This shall include:
▪ Contributions to activity outreach, including e.g. Web articles, publications, presentations in relevant workshops and conferences.
▪ Support to the organisation of the Areas of Competences Final Presentation Days.
▪ Support to the maintenance of the Areas of Competences archive, Teams areas, and Web pages.
▪ Actions related to the ESA Knowledge Management programme.
What you offer:
- A master's degree or a PhD in space physics, IT field or related space environment domain is required.
- General background and specific experience in the space environments and effects domain, including plasma, radiation, dust, microparticles and planetary atmospheres
- Experience of using and/or developing key space environment software, models, and IT frameworks, including e.g. SPIS, Geant4/GRAS, ESABASE2, SPENVIS, Network of Models (NoM), Open Data Interface (ODI)
- Experience of interfacing to relevant developer communities
- Knowledge of relevant ECSS Standards
- Experience in related technologies, R&D trends and the industrial landscape
- Project support experience in a relevant domain
- Experience in the preparation of procurement activities for technology development and innovation (Statements of Work, proposal evaluation, etc.)
- Experience in the management and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews
- Experience in the design and development space environment instrumentation
- Experience in relevant testing and characterisation activities
- Experience in technical contract management

Where:
You will be working within ESTEC, the European Space Agency’s offices in the Netherlands as a contractor for Telespazio Belgium. We don’t expect the employees to be on-site full time however you will still have to relocate to the Netherlands for this position.
