On behalf of the European Space Agency, we are looking for a highly skilled TT&C – Payload Data Transmission Engineer to work in ESTEC, in the Netherlands.
What is expected from you:
- The candidate shall support the Head of the RF Payload Architects, comms subsystems and digital equipment Section for the following matters:
- Contribution to the engineering work in the field of RF communication subsystems (e.g. TT&C, PDT, ISL subsystems) in support to ESA Projects, which includes:
- Supporting Staff in interfacing with Projects (and Studies). This includes:
- Providing expertise to support Projects (and Studies) throughout all project phases;
- Performing and documenting relevant analyses;
- Supporting the implementation of industrial project activities;
- Supporting and performing “in-house” design and trade-offs to support projects pecific technology developments;
- Supporting the implementation of industrial project activities;
- Carrying out computer simulations at system/subsystem level for the assessment of end-to-end RF comms subsystems and TT&C/PDT subsystems performance;
- Providing hands-on RF comms subsystems modelling and testing support to projects, which will require proper coordination with the corresponding Laboratory Service.
- Supporting and contributing to meetings and reviews.
- Identification, implementation, validation, and operation of the relevant section tools, which includes:
- Providing expertise related to the software, hardware and data related tools;
- Participating in the development, validation, deployment and maintenance of relevant internal software tools and databases;
- Liaising with Technical Responsible for the proper configuration of software / hardware either developed in the service itself or originating from external activities.
- Operating the tools for the purpose of supporting Projects or ESA R&D activities.
- Support to Staff in the implementation of R&D activities in the technical domain. This includes:
- Providing technical inputs to the definition of technology roadmaps and contributing to relevant reviews and meetings;
- Monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining stateof-the art expertise in RF comms subsystems;
- Providing inputs to documentation and meetings / reviews, conducting relevant technical analyses;
- Contribute to the definition of technical requirements and statements of work for the tasks to be performed by industry from early conceptual studies to full hardware development;
- Reviewing output from industry / academia and providing inputs to the ESA Technical Officer. This includes – when relevant – the conduction of software or of hardware tests in a Divisional laboratory, which will require proper coordination with the corresponding Laboratory Service;
- Supporting the ESA Technical representative in meeting with industry / academia;
- When required, organizing ad hoc meetings with industry / academia and reporting on their outcome to the ESA Technical representative.
- Activities shall be reported through inputs to the Section activity report and ad hoc presentations when relevant.
- In the frame of these functional tasks, technical activities are expected to include:
- Specification, design, development, verification/acceptance of TT&C/PDT subsystems, including their associated EGSE and related equipment (e.g. receivers, transmitters, transponders). Design and implementation of associated functions and techniques within the TT&C/PDT subsystem, in particular: modulation, signal synchronisation, digital signal processing, error control coding;
- Support to Projects, throughout all phases, regarding the follow up of industrial activities and procurement of TT&C/PDT subsystems and associated EGSE and equipment, and as part of R&D activities;
- Apportionment of requirements and generation of specifications from subsystem downto equipment and antenna;
- Study and implementation of new architectures, technologies and techniques for TT&C/PDT subsystems; support the harmonisation process on TT&C/PDT subsystems and technologies;
- TT&C/PDT subsystems assembly, integration, testing (AIT), characterisation and validation activities;
- Development of simulation tools and associated paradigms in support to the design, development and performance evaluation of TT&C and PDT subsystems;
- Implementation of laboratory activities associated to testing, characterisation and performance assessment of TT&C and PDT subsystems.within the TT&C/PDT subsystem, in particular: modulation, signal synchronisation,
digital signal processing, error control coding; - Support to Projects, throughout all phases, regarding the follow up of industrial activities and procurement of TT&C/PDT subsystems and associated EGSE and equipment, and as part of R&D activities;

What you offer:
- University Master’s degree in Microwave, Telecommunications or Electronics Engineering,
- Several years of experience in the architectural definition, analysis, design, development and testing of RF Payloads and/or Microwave/Millimeter-wave Instruments, including applications such as Telecommunications, Earth Observation and/or Navigation.
- Very good knowledge of Radio Frequency Payloads and Microwave/Millimeter-wave instruments architectures and technologies, including telecom transparent and regenerative payloads, phased array antennas and beamforming, T/R modules.
- Very good knowledge of payload (digital) signal processing on-board techniques and technologies, (e.g. digital beamforming, channelization, modem, …)
- Very good knowledge of end-to-end RF payload performance assessment and signal quality analysis, Very good knowledge of modern computer systems, simulation and modelling tools, programming languages,(e.g. Matlab, Phyton)
- Knowledge of telecom, earth observation and navigation signals is an asset,
- Experience on RF Payloads and/or Microwave Instruments Assembly, Integration and Testing.
- Experience on procurement of RF Payloads and/or Microwave instruments is an asset.

Where:
You will be working within ESTEC, the European Space Agency’s offices in the Netherlands as a contractor for Telespazio Belgium. We don’t expect the employees to be on-site full time however you will still have to relocate to the Netherlands for this position.
