On behalf of the European Space Agency, we are looking for a highly skilled Flight Software Support Engineer to work in ESTEC, in the Netherlands.

What is expected from you:

  • Provide technical support to Projects
  • The candidate shall support ESA Staff in providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes in the field of Flight Software throughout all project phasesby:
    1. Supporting a variety of ESA space missions in the field of real-time embedded software systems; including mainly spacecraft platforms and payloads, and their corresponding software verification & validation facilities (e.g. test benches, software validation facilities, simulators)
    2. Participating in the full development lifecycle of the mission and on-board software, from requirement specification till launch and commissioning, and covering the different functional verification & validation activities
    3. Identifying technical risks and critical areas in the development process while assisting in their resolution
    4. Applying the principles of mission & safety critical software development across multiple disciplines, by following the corresponding space software related engineering standards.
  • Support to R&D Programmes and Activities
  • The candidate shall provide expert technical support and consultancy to ESA Staff for the implementation and execution of R&D programmes and activities in the field of flight software, including:
    1. contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency’s technology programmes
    2. supporting the ESA Staff in defining, initiating and managing R&D activities covering both long- and short-term needs
    3. supporting the ESA Staff in R&D activity reviews and meetings and reporting on the R&D activity development, progress and planning
    4. supporting the ESA Staff in updating associated technical dossier, roadmap and harmonisation with European industries, laboratories and national agencies; new application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cutting-edge technologies and system architectures.
    5. Support the section in maintaining and improving the coordination and knowledge management in the field of on-board software via the following tasks:
    a. participating to Section meetings
    b. contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency
    c. Introducing any lesson learnt, important information and results from R&D developments, Project support and hands-on activities in common repository and in any other ad hoc directories that will be specified
    d. supporting the monitoring of applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise.
  • Support to Flight Software Laboratory:
  • The Flight Software Laboratory consists of several HW boards and SW tools, enabling handson support activities to ESA programmes and R&D activities, and research on novel SW development environments and SW ecosystems. Certain facilities of the laboratory can also be accessed by ESA's industrial partners.
  • The candidate will support the activities run by the ESA Staff in these facilities.
    For each specific lab facility, tasks will include:

1. Manage setup, development, update, optimization, including the relevant HW and SW elements
2. Assist ongoing projects with the design implementation, prototyping, testing, evaluation, optimization, benchmarking, debugging, and validation on the corresponding facility
3. Provide expertise in the implementation, use, testing, operation, and validation of the functionality and performance of designs
4. Plan, specify and setup of integration, functional and performance test and validation campaigns.

5.Perform integration, functional and performance testing of relevant hardware and software elements in the facility
6. Recording, analysis and documentation of test and validation activities and test results, including equipment setup and configuration, and failure incidents
7. Contribute to the development management and planning of the facility
The candidate shall comply with the ESA Quality Management System.

Where:

You will be working within ESTEC, the European Space Agency’s offices in the Netherlands as a contractor for Telespazio Belgium. We don’t expect the employees to be on-site full time however you will still have to relocate to the Netherlands for this position.
